The National Institute of Rural Development is the apex research, training and consultancy organisation in the field of rural development India. It acts as a think tank to the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. Recognising the importance of ICTs in rural delopment especially its impact on education, health, panchayati raj, gender, livelihoods etc., NIRD, based on a recommendation at a national seminar held in August 2004, embarked upon a project to develop case libraries of successful initiatives that are ongoing or made a mark on the development to realize the Millennium Development Goal to halve the poverty by 2015. The project identifies initiatives that use ICTs in furthering the effort in education, employment and livelihood, health, nutrition, family welfare, gender empowerment, market information services, socio-political empowerment and related activities.
