The condition of Zambia farming

From Zambia Workshop

Jones and Mike, who live in Zambia and work for Michigan State University, gave an introduction to Zambian farming. The presentation discussed the importance of education in making it possible for the farmer to obtain off-farm income. This income could then make the difference between getting an animal or having to continue to hoe the ground by hand.

One of the issues they are currently studying is the rate at which newly widowed women are losing their land. Unfortunately, women traditionally lose their land when their husbands die. As bad as this is when a women is old and probably had older children to support her, it's a disaster when her husband has died of AIDS and she has young children to support.

Jones and Mike are in the process of releasing information on the Zambian informal market.
